Contending for the Faith: Lessons from Titus on Modern Heresy
Is your church shifting from a rescue mission for souls to a hostile takeover of culture? The Book of Titus provides a tactical manual for the modern watchman. Learn how to identify "Apostolic Alignment" errors, rebuke extra-biblical myths, and return to the simple, restful Gospel of Grace.
As spiritual tides continue to shift, the warnings found in the New Testament remain our only anchor. The Book of Titus is not merely a historical letter; it is a tactical manual for the Church in Crete—a society famously described as being full of "liars, evil beasts, and lazy gluttons."
Today, as the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) and New Age philosophies seep into our sanctuaries, the instructions Paul gave to Titus provide the blueprint for the modern watchman to identify deception and protect the flock.
The Biblical Mandate for Sound Doctrine
Paul’s letter to Titus focuses on a singular, urgent priority: establishing an orderly church leadership to combat false teaching. Paul argues that true faith must result in godly behavior, standing in stark contrast to the "myths" and "heresies" currently being rebranded as "new moves of the Spirit."
Key Themes in Contending for the Faith
- Defending Sound Doctrine: Titus was charged with correcting false teachers who disrupted families with greedy teaching. He was instructed to "hold fast" to the faithful word to both instruct and correct.
- Appointing Qualified Leaders: Leadership is the first line of defense. Titus was tasked with establishing elders who were blameless and capable of refuting opponents—not leaders who demand "Apostolic Alignment" or unquestioning submission.
- Holy Living as Defense: Proper doctrine must result in holy living. The Gospel isn't a tool for cultural takeover; it is a call to live "soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age" (Titus 2:12).
- Rebuking False Teachers: Titus was commanded to "sharply rebuke" those who had strayed, ensuring they remained sound in faith rather than focusing on "Jewish myths" or human commandments.
- Dealing with Heresy: The mandate is clear: warn a divisive person twice, and if they do not repent, reject them. Biblical unity is never maintained at the expense of biblical truth.
Applying Titus to the NAR Trojan Horse
The deceptions Paul warned Titus about have striking parallels to the "New Revelations" we see today. To truly contend for the faith, we must apply these ancient instructions to the modern influence of the NAR.
1. Silencing the "New Revelations"
Paul warned against "commandments of men who turn from the truth" (Titus 1:14). Today, the NAR frequently introduces extra-biblical prophecies and "Apostolic decrees" that claim to supersede Scripture. Contending for the faith means rejecting any "word" that adds to the finished work of the 66 books of the Bible.
2. Identifying the Motive of "Dishonest Gain"
Titus was told to rebuke those teaching things they ought not "for the sake of dishonest gain" (Titus 1:11). We see this in the "Prosperity Gospel" and "Seven Mountain Mandate" circles, where spiritual influence is often monetized and "Kingdom influence" is used to extract financial "seeds" from well-meaning believers.
3. The Test of Godliness vs. Dominionist Power
The NAR often prioritizes power, signs, and cultural dominion. However, Titus teaches that the fruit of sound doctrine is self-control, integrity, and humility (Titus 2:7). If a movement produces "Apostles" who seek earthly crowns and political supremacy but lack the sobriety and cross-bearing lifestyle commanded by Paul, they are "disqualified for every good work" (Titus 1:16).
The Watchman’s Warning: "They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work." — Titus 1:16
Key Verses on Contending
- Titus 1:9: "...holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict."
- Titus 2:1: "But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine."
- Titus 3:8: "...those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works."
